Living in Richmond, California
Richmond calls itself the "City of Pride and Purpose". In 1905 when the city was incorporated, it counted some 2,150 citizens. Now there are over 102,000 inhabitants within its circumscription. During WWII Richmond's shipyard attracted a lot of workers - men and women (a monument to those women workers was erected and named after 'Rosie the Riveter'). The end of the war saw a significant decline in the city's population. But by the late 1950's it underwent a growth in warehousing, distribution, chemical and research facilities. Chevron now employs a substantial workforce.
Also, from 1960 to the end of the century, four major developments were planned and implemented: the creation of Marina Bay, a 350 acre waterfront community which sits by the shore of our beautiful Bay.
Another is the Hilltop Shopping Mall along Interstate 80; the Knox Freeway which joins I80 to the Richmond San Rafael Bridge. And the building of the Richmond Parkway Express which connects the Northern and Southern corners of Richmond. All gave the city a very welcome and necessary boost.
