Living in Oakland, California Oakland has a population over 400,000 strong, comprising a great variety of ethnic groups. The Spaniards first came by in the 1780's to return to settle in the 1820's. Other ethnic groups came with the gold rush and with the building of the railroad. WWII also saw a great emigration of African American from the south. Oakland has one of California's major ports even more important than the ports of Los Angeles and of San Francisco. The port of Oakland owns and operates the important Oakland Airport, as well as Jack London Square, an upscale shopping, restaurant and entertainment venue named after one of its most famous past residents - the writer, Jack London. One of Oakland's prettiest features is Lake Merritt. Forbes ranked Oakland the eigthth best city in the United States for business. And Newsweek magazine placed it in the top ten urban centers for technology. Oakland owns a football and baseball team: the Raiders and the Oakland A's. Oakland has also a corps de ballet, an opera, a symphony and its own museum - the only museum devoted to the art, history and natural sciences of California. Let's not forget the Paramount Theater that is a splendid remaining example of art deco design, dedicated to all types of performing arts events. As a final note, Oakland's present mayor, Jerry Brown, is and has been a most colorful - if somewhat controversial, political figure in California.  Oakland Local Links
